Bauhaus in the “province”. The artist and design teacher Werner Schriefers in Wuppertal. Compared to the Bauhaus-City of Krefeld with its numerous Bauhaus-inspired events in 2019, the western part of Wuppertal has remained unknown as the location of a Werkkunst-schule with a Bauhaus orientation. Like Krefeld on the left of the Rhine, the former town of Wuppertal-Vohwinkel and the quarter of Döppersberg belong to the North Rhine region. Here, the free artist Werner Schriefers, a second-generation Bauhaus student, taught the elementary subject of design. Officially a student of Georg Muche, he was close to Paul Klee as an educator and as a painter, as will be shown. The comparison between the works of Schriefers and Klee means to illuminate similarities, parallels, further developments and differences. The discourse concerns the artistic work on the one hand, and the teaching of design on the other. Sometimes the artistic work already shows a didactic reference.
