Art Matters with Dr. Annie Bourneuf – Santa Barbara Museum of Art

The book "Behind the Angel of History" (published by the University of Chicago Press in 2022) opens with artist R. H. Quaytman unveiling an unexpected finding concerning a piece by Paul Klee. Beneath Klee’s renowned 1920 work Angelus Novus—a piece notable for its influence on Walter Benjamin, the artwork's first owner—Quaytman discovered Klee had incorporated a 19th-century print of Martin Luther, exposed just enough to incite inquiry. The book scrutinizes the significance of this concealed image, delving into the entangled artistic, political, and theological issues that were prevalent in Germany following the Great War. Klee's Angelus Novus is interpreted as his reaction to the rising demand for a new form of religious art. For Benjamin, this artwork became a focal point for envisaging meaningful interfaith dialogue in Germany. Through exploring the multi-layered strategy of superimposing images employed by Klee, Benjamin, and Quaytman, Annie Bourneuf uncovers newfound depth and intricacy in this emblematic artwork and the related literature it stimulated. This work on Art Matters is generously supported by the SBMA Women's Board.
